As details about the impending high-profile event start to surface, Tom Brady’s induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame on June 12 may equal ‘Larry Bird Night’ at the Boston Celtics.
Tom Brady’s induction into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame may be modeled after the Boston Celtics’ 1993 “Larry Bird Night” ceremony for Larry Bird, it has been reported.
Mike Reiss of ESPN, a Patriots insider, disclosed on Sunday that Brady will make his way back to New England for the June 12 ceremony, where he will receive recognition at Gillette Stadium as part of a ‘unique’ occasion in the team’s history.
“Ticket information and preferred pricing for the event through April 12 will be sent to Patriots season ticket holders starting next week,” he stated.
The general public will be able to purchase any merchandise that remains after the presale later in April.
It sounds like this could be comparable to the historic “Larry Bird Night” in 1993 for veteran New England sports fans.
A little more than thirty years ago, at Bird’s honoring following his three NBA titles won for the team between 1979 and 1992, 14,000 Celtics supporters who were fortunate enough to be able to enter Boston Garden celebrated the memories that Bird had given them for thirteen seasons.
‘Officially termed, ”Larry Bird Night,” the ceremony was a combination of Celtic pomp and grandeur, the basketball equivalent of a Kennedy wedding, according to an article published in the Los Angeles Times 31 years ago.
This sports-obsessed town became enthralled with bird-mania as the day approached. A special piece on Bird, thick enough to pin an arm to the floor, appeared in the Boston Globe. The cost of commemorative T-shirts was $15.50. Bird’s autographed photos brought $245 at auction. Larry Bird
Limited Edition Coins cost up to $995 and came with a simple payment plan. Price tags on autographed plaques totaled $139.
The retirement party had turned into a side business, although in this instance, Bird, a major contributor to the Celtic charitable organization, received the entire net revenues from the sales.
Nevertheless, it also had workaholic tributes from supporters who were formerly teammates and coaches, all in keeping with the Bird persona.
Memorably, Magic Johnson was present at Bird’s induction into the Celtics Hall of Fame.
Regarded as the most exceptional quarterback in NFL history, Brady spent 20 of his 23 seasons with the Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls, four MVP awards for the Super Bowl, and three MVP awards for the regular season.
During his tenure with New England, he also became the NFL’s all-time leader in throwing yards and touchdowns.
Brady will always be remembered as a Patriot first and foremost, even if he played the final three years of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he added one more ring and another MVP award in the Super Bowl sans Bill Belichick.
Thus, it should not be shocking in the slightest that the Patriots are paying tribute to one of the greatest players in league history.
