Fans may not have anticipated the Andy Robertson to Real Madrid transfer rumor before the summer transfer window opened, but that is the most recent assertion coming out of Scotland.
Nearing the end of his sixth season at Liverpool, Robertson has played for the club in at least 40 games for the fifth time since moving there from Hull.
The Scotland captain is an essential member of Jurgen Klopp’s team, and even during the Reds’ recent slump in performance, he seemed to be one of the more reliable players.
But the Scottish Daily Mail claims he is drawing interest from Real because Liverpool would likely miss out on Champions League football the following season.
Real are reportedly looking for a successor for the departed Ferland Mendy and have “registered an interest” in Robertson, according to chief football writer Stephen McGowan.
A hypothetical move, according to McGowan, might be valued “in excess of £40 million,” but unexpectedly the left-back has showed “no inclination to leave.”It’s not the first time a Liverpool player has been unexpectedly linked with Real; in 2021, BBC Sport said that Real was interested in signing Joe Gomez.
Again, it appears extremely improbable that a move would materialize despite potential approaches from Madrid.
Naturally, the recent switch by Liverpool to a 3-4-3 system in possession has added a new wrinkle to the tale and necessitated Robertson to adjust his position.
Trent Alexander-Arnold can now go into midfield from right back thanks to the 29-year-old’s more prominent role as a left center-back. Trent recently acknowledged that this has required him to “make sacrifices.”
Robertson said he would “happily be doing that job” and that he has “adapted well to it” in an interview with the club’s official website.
Prior to the summer transfer season, Liverpool has been associated with a number of left-sided center backs, most recently Micky Van de Ven of Wolfsburg.
Levi Colwill of Chelsea, Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig, and Nayef Aguerd of West Ham are all said to be targets for Klopp. That does not mean, however, that Robertson is about to leave, and it is more likely that Kostas Tsimikas would be seen as expendable – or even that any new center back brought in would serve as Virgil van Dijk’s long-term replacement.
