Amari Williams Breaks Silence After Being Drafted by Celtics: “Beyond Blessed”
The Boston Celtics may have just found a hidden gem in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft.
With the 46th overall pick, the reigning Eastern Conference powerhouse selected Amari Williams, a 6-foot-10 center whose blend of size, athleticism, and court vision has quietly made him one of the most versatile big men in this draft class.
Shortly after hearing his name called on draft night, Williams took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his reaction in just two words:
“Beyond blessed” — a message posted alongside a green heart and a shamrock, signaling his excitement to join the historic Celtics franchise.
A British Big Man Making NBA History
While his name might sound like that of a typical American prospect, Amari Williams is proudly British—born and raised in England. His journey to the NBA is anything but ordinary. Williams spent four standout years at Drexel University, establishing himself as a defensive anchor and an elite passing big, before transferring to Kentucky for his final collegiate season as a super senior.
At age 23, he entered the draft as one of the more experienced and physically mature players available. During his final college season with the Wildcats, Williams averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists over 36 games, showcasing an all-around game that fits well in today’s modern NBA schemes.
Celtics Making Smart Moves in the Second Round
The Celtics didn’t originally hold the 46th pick. In a smart trade with the Orlando Magic, Boston moved down from the 32nd overall pick to acquire both the No. 46 and No. 57 selections, targeting players who they believe fit their system and long-term vision.
Amari Williams was one of those selections—and given the timing of the trade and the roster needs of the Celtics, it may turn out to be a pivotal move.
Boston’s frontcourt is in transition following the blockbuster trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis out of town. With Al Horford and Luke Kornet entering free agency, and the team navigating complex payroll limitations, the Celtics desperately needed youthful, affordable big men who can contribute early.
Williams checks that box—and more.
Celtics Front Office Speaks Out on the Pick
Following the draft, Celtics vice president of basketball operations Mike Zarren explained the thinking behind the selection, offering high praise for Williams’ skillset and basketball IQ.
“He’s been one of the best passing big men in college for a long time,” Zarren said. “He’s an elite rebounder, he’s a great guy, he had a wonderful career at Drexel, and then stepped it up another level at Kentucky.”
Zarren also highlighted Williams’ massive wingspan and court vision, traits that have become must-haves for centers in today’s NBA where versatility, floor spacing, and high-IQ playmaking are at a premium.
“When you meet him, you’ll see he’s got just an enormous, enormous wingspan,” Zarren added. “And as you’ll see on the court, if you haven’t seen already, he’s got incredible vision. And those things are just key abilities in the modern NBA.”
A Golden Opportunity in Boston
The Celtics are still considered a top contender for the NBA title, but their roster is undergoing subtle shifts behind the scenes. That opens the door for players like Amari Williams to not only make the roster but potentially play meaningful minutes during the regular season.
His experience, passing ability, and rebounding presence could make him an ideal rotational piece behind Boston’s stars. And at 23, he’s expected to bring more polish and maturity than a younger rookie just entering the league.
With a strong showing in Summer League and training camp, Williams could position himself as a legitimate contributor in the Celtics’ second unit.
A Dream Realized, a New Chapter Begins
From London to Lexington, and now to Boston, Amari Williams’ basketball journey continues to defy expectations. As he takes the next step onto the NBA stage, he does so with humility, excitement, and the work ethic that got him here.
The Celtics didn’t just draft a center—they may have drafted their next big steal.
And if Williams’ reaction is any sign of things to come, Celtics Nation should be excited too.
“Beyond blessed.”
Now, it’s time to show the world what he can do.
