According to experts, Kentucky basketball has produced five of the top 25 freshman since 2000.

Kentucky basketball has long been associated with standout freshmen, particularly during John Calipari’s tenure, when the program became known as a premier destination for one-and-done talent.

Now, ESPN’s Myron Medcalf has further cemented that legacy by naming five former Wildcats among the top 25 freshmen in men’s college basketball since 2000.

Some fans remember the victories; others, the heartbreaking losses. But what’s unforgettable is the excitement these young stars brought during their brief, but brilliant, time at UK. Here are the five Kentucky players who made the list:

No. 25 – Malik Monk (2016–17)

Stats: 19.8 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 2.3 APG, 45% FG, 39.7% 3PT

Team Result: Elite Eight

Monk dazzled fans with his scoring outbursts, including an unforgettable 47-point performance against North Carolina. Despite falling short in the Elite Eight, he earned SEC Player of the Year honors and consistently delivered in clutch moments.

No. 22 – DeMarcus Cousins (2009–10)

Stats: 15.1 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 55.8% FG

Team Result: Elite Eight

Cousins, nicknamed “Boogie,” was Calipari’s first dominant big man. Alongside John Wall, he helped power a 35-win season. His imposing presence and rebounding prowess earned him AP First Team All-American honors and a lasting legacy in Kentucky history.

Karl-Anthony Towns (2014–15)

Stats: 10.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 2.3 BPG (in just 21 minutes per game)

Team Result: Final Four

Towns didn’t post massive stats due to Kentucky’s platoon system, but his efficiency and selfless play were crucial to the team’s 38-0 start. Despite a Final Four loss, his defensive impact and leadership helped make him the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

No. 12 – John Wall (2009–10)

Wall was a game-changer, bringing a new level of speed, flair, and leadership to the court that season. He played a major role in Kentucky’s revival and left as one of the program’s most electrifying point guards.

No. 1 – Anthony Davis (2011–12)

Stats: 14.2 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 4.7 BPG

Team Result: National Champion

At the top of the list is Anthony Davis, whose freshman season is widely regarded as the greatest ever. He led Kentucky to its first national title in over a decade, earned the Wooden Award, NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and topped the nation in blocks all as a freshman. His dominance was unparalleled.

Who was left out?

Some fans might feel players like Devin Booker, Jamal Murray, or De’Aaron Fox were worthy of inclusion. Still, with five players recognized second most of any program it’s clear that Kentucky’s freshman legacy remains unmatched.

One year, lasting impact

Whether their seasons ended with a championship or March disappointment, each of these freshmen made a lasting impression on Kentucky basketball and the sport itself. While most schools are lucky to land one transcendent freshman per generation, Kentucky has enjoyed a steady stream of them year after year.
