Tyrese Proctor’s signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers was not the last indicator of his success as a former guard for Duke.
Tyrese Proctor, a Duke basketball product, received a four-year, $8.9 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers this week, fulfilling his childhood dream of playing in the NBA.
The assignment of Proctor’s rookie-year numbers marked the conclusion of his journey to the league. The 21-year-old Australian will wear jersey number 24 as a Cavalier after donning number 5 for three seasons as a Blue Devil. Melissa Proctor apparently had to overcome a long-standing distaste in order to fulfil a commitment she made to her son eleven years ago when the jersey number was announced.
“I’m afraid of needles, but I made a deal with Tyrese when he was ten years old,” she wrote in the subsequent social media post on Monday, showcasing the permanent advertisement of her son’s professional jersey number on her wrist. It was carried out last night.
The Cleveland Cavaliers posted the following Tyrese Proctor video check-in from the team’s practice facility later that day to welcome the rookie to the city and further introduce him to his new fan base:
During the first three seasons of Jon Scheyer’s tenure, Proctor was the only Duke basketball scholarship athlete to play in Durham. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team in 2022–2023 and went on to win All-ACC Tournament Second Team and All-ACC Third Team for the 2024–25 Blue Devils.
