Chelsea dealt Benoit Badiashile injury blow as Levi Colwill handed boost ahead of imminent Mauricio Pochettino arrival

Benoit Badiashile’s groin injury will prevent him from playing at the start of the upcoming season, which is a setback for Chelsea.

After suffering the injury in practice, Badiashile was unable to play in Sunday’s Premier League match between Chelsea and Manchester City at Etihad Stadium. According to Evening Standard, the 22-year-old is now scheduled to have surgery on Monday that might prevent him from working for up to four months.

This implies that Badiashile won’t be available to the club’s upcoming new manager Mauricio Pochettino during the preseason. The defender Levi Colwill, who impressed while on loan at Brighton, is expected to return to the Blues next season, so there is some good news for the Argentine. Given that both Colwill and the Frenchman are left-sided center backs and concerns had been raised about their compatibility in the same lineup, the Frenchman’s unlucky injury should allow Colwill greater playing time.

During the January transfer window, Badiashile transferred from Monaco to Chelsea for a sum totaling £35 million. The Frenchman scored once in 11 Premier League games during the previous five months despite not being selected for Chelsea’s Champions League knockout team.
