Chelsea told they now have an ‘aggressive’ £39m defender who is very similar to Kolo Toure

Chelsea’s Axel Disasi has a lot of similarities to former Premier League star Kolo Toure.

That is according to Anton Ferdinand.

Chelsea completed the signing of Axel Disasi from Ligue 1 side Monaco last summer in a £39 million deal (Sky Sports), which did come as a bit of a surprise to us.

The 25-year-old defender has been a regular starter in his first season at Stamford Bridge, whether that’s at centre-back or right-back. Incidentally, he looks a lot more comfortable in his preferred role at centre-half.

He’s played 23 games across all competitions this campaign, scoring on his debut versus Liverpool in August.

Anton Ferdinand has compared Chelsea’s defender to Kolo Toure, the former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool player.

Toure was a serial winner during his playing career, but he always played second fiddle to defensive partners such as Sol Campbell and Vincent Kompany. He perhaps doesn’t get the respect his career deserves.

Ferdinand has compared Disasi’s aggressive and rash defending to Toure.

Kolo Toure was a fantastic defender, aggressive, but always had to make last-ditch tackles because he was in the wrong position… I think he’s (Disasi) very much aggressive, front-foot, like how Kolo started. I think there’s potential in there.”

Axel Disasi similar to Kolo Toure

We can understand the comparison after watching Disasi’s first six months in Chelsea colours.

The France international may fall into the category of one of the club’s better transfer buys since the change of ownership in 2022, but we still want far more consistency from him in his defending.

Speaking via Football.London earlier this month, Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino claimed that Disasi does have the potential to improve and be much better after a decent start in West London.

Our feeling is Disasi will need to raise his levels to nail down a permanent spot in the starting line-up. However, he should be pleased with a positive start with lots of appearances.

You often need some unsung heroes in any successful team to drive them forward, perhaps Disasi can fit into that category over time.
