Mason Mount, a star for Chelsea, has spoken out on rumors that he would switch to Manchester United during the summer transfer window. This weekend’s Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix is being attended by Mount, Reece James, and Ben Chilwell.
The 24-year-old is approaching the final year of his current contract at Stamford Bridge, and attempts to extend it thus far have been futile. In spite of interest from Liverpool and Arsenal, United are now in the lead in the fight to sign Mount this summer.
According to a source who spoke to football.london, the 24-year-old midfielder was hopeful that a new contract could be completed soon before the FIFA World Cup last summer. However, when Mount and his group returned to west London after the World Cup, the offer was no longer available since Chelsea had a new-look transfer team in place.
Although Erik ten Hag’s team hasn’t made an official bid for the Blues midfielder, senior United officials have started talking to Chelsea and have made it obvious that they want to sign the England international. James acknowledged that it would be “sad” for Mount to leave the team this summer, and Chilwell made a similar statement.
After news broke that Old Trafford was Mount’s favourite destination should he decide to leave Stamford Bridge before the start of the following season, Mount has now addressed the rumors linking him with a move there. The Chelsea star was asked about a potential transfer to United by host Martin Brundle during Sky Sports’ coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix.
Brundle said: “He [Ben Chilwell] said you’re going to Man United!” To which Mount laughed and replied: “No I’m just here to enjoy this race today, an amazing day, I can’t wait to watch it!”
