Jamie Carragher has suggested another player who Liverpool should “move on” for the appropriate price as they undergo a roster revamp.
With numerous senior players departing and a slew of high-profile acquisitions to be made, this summer will be crucial for Liverpool.
The players that have already departed are Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Arthur. Fabio Carvalho, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Nat Phillips might also leave.
Although the emphasis is on improving the middle, defensive reinforcements could also be made.
Liverpool has been linked with a variety of left-sided center backs, including Micky van de Ven of Wolfsburg, Levi Colwill of Chelsea, and Goncalo Inacio of Sporting CP.
When I consider the defense, I realize that Joel Matip still has one year left on his deal. Whatever the cost, if you received £10 million, it’s probably time to move on, he added.
“I do believe we need a left-sided defender, a center-back with a left foot. We don’t have them, although many teams do.
“A player on the left side would add something.
If we are going to keep using this system, [it should be] purchasing a centre-back who can play the full-back position rather than a left-back because I don’t think we will.
I really believe that Liverpool should sign a left-sided center-back capable of playing left-back.
As Carragher noted, Matip heads into next season with only a year left on his contract, and turning 32 in August it is unclear whether he would be offered an extension.
Since Ibrahima Konate has surpassed Liverpool’s No. 32 in the lineup, there have already been silent rumors that Liverpool would contemplate trading the player this summer.
However, the likelihood of doing so without bringing in a replacement is slim, and it looks that the team is attempting to sign a left-sided center-back.
It’s unclear whether that player will take Matip’s spot right away because Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams, who had filled in as the fifth choice, are also anticipated to go during the transfer window.
However, it’s conceivable that Liverpool would think about selling Matip if the appropriate deal came through.
