The latest Liverpool FC news as the reaction to Sunday’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United continues

Former referee-turned-Sky Sports expert Dermot Gallagher provided some insight into why Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was shown a red card in the first half of Sunday’s win over Newcastle.

He explained the decision was a result of the Denial of a Clear Goalscoring Opportunity (DOGSO), which he personally believed made John Brooks’ on-field call the correct one.

In agreeance were pundits Sue Smith and most reluctantly former Reds defender Stephen Warnock.

The ex-Reds defender conceded it ‘probably’ was deserving of a red card, however the decision was a ‘frustrating’ one to see with a clear attempt to get the ball made

Former Liverpool striker Jon Newby shared his delight to be in the away end at St. James’ Park on Sunday, branding the occasion as ‘best away celebrations’ he has been involved in.

Newby was part of the 1996 FA Youth Cup winning side. He moved down the football pyramid to forge a career and later returned to Kirkby as an Academy coach and scout.

Against Newcastle he was in awe with fellow striker Darwin Nunez for his late substitute impact and also expressed jubilation to have experienced such a moment with his son
