Chelsea will not be signing Ivan Fresneda from Real Valladolid this summer despite reports from Spain labelling the Blues as favourites.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano.
So, what is the latest on Ivan Fresneda and Chelsea? Let’s take a look…
Well – according to Mundo Deportivo in Spain – Chelsea were leading the race to sign the Real Valladolid No.27 ahead of Barcelona.
The Spanish news outlet claimed that Chelsea planned to trigger Fresneda’s €20m (£17m) release clause before loaning him out elsewhere.
Now – however – the reliable Romano has gone against those claims.
Speaking on YouTube, the Italian journalist said: “For Fresneda, no chance to join Chelsea this summer. Chelsea have different strategy, Chelsea are very happy with Malo Gusto.
“Fresneda is not part of Chelsea’s plans this summer, at least as of now this is Chelsea’s position regarding all the rumours and links with Fresneda.”
In our analysis of Mundo Deportivo’s story, we mentioned that it would be bizarre if Chelsea signed the 18-year-old given the fact Mauricio Pochettino already has Reece James and Malo Gusto.
After Romano’s revelation, it appears Chelsea are on the same page.
Chelsea should keep an eye on Fresneda
While it would make no sense to sign Fresneda now, Chelsea should definitely keep tabs on his progress – he is a quality prospect who boasts the potential to become a superb player.
Gusto looked solid against West Ham in the absence of James, and is also a right-back of real potential.
However, if the Frenchman ultimately fails to make it at Chelsea, and James also fails to keep himself fit, then perhaps it would be worth Chelsea exploring a move for Fresneda later down the line.
For now, though, it would be a real shock if the teenager ended up at Stamford Bridge.
Be sure to keep an eye on developments at Chelsea, as the Blues are still expected to make more additions despite deciding against a move for Fresneda.
