Chelsea may have to sacrifice brilliant young talent to start paying huge transfer debts

The rumours have been leaking out all day, but they now have top confirmation from the best sources: Newcastle are closing in on a deal to sign Lewis Hall permanently from Chelsea.

It will cost them just £35m, and comes with the left back pushing for Champions League football – as opposed to a blocked pathway to the first team at Chelsea, where he has waited patiently for two years, yet was all but ignored in preseason.

Chelsea have apparently rejected multiple offers already, but will likely cave in eventually, given they have a vast black hole of debt to fill, and Hall is home grown.

In the end, this whole affair began with the totally unnecessary signing of Marc Cucurella for a vast sum last summer. We could have saved that money and promoted Hall (who had shown more than enough times he was capable of being at least second choice). Instead, we’re selling an academy gem to a direct rival, all because we can’t stomach taking a big loss on Cucurella.
