Jurgen Klopp reacts to 4-0 win over Leicester City as Darwin Nunez scores yet again for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp has mapped out Darwin Nunez’s road back into the Liverpool first team after the striker continued his impressive pre-season.
Nunez netted his fourth goal in three friendlies this summer by sending the Reds on their way to a 4-0 win over Championship side Leicester City in Singapore on Sunday.
The Uruguayan endured a difficult debut season at Anfield having been signed for what could become a club record £85million from Benfica last year, and started only three of Liverpool’s final 12 games last season.
And with Liverpool beginning their Premier League campaign at Chelsea in a fortnight, Klopp has explained how Nunez can force his way into the attack.
Sometimes it needs more time, that’s how it is,” said the Reds boss. “The signs Darwin showed last season were really good. Injuries, red card, were not helpful at the start. But it’s all good. We just need to find it together in different set-ups.
The ticket into the team will be the readiness to defend. I’ve never heard about a team being really successful with sloppy defending. It doesn’t happen.
“It’s the same for Darwin and all the other strikers. I know all about the quality they have and they need to do both – defend and be influential in all offensive situations.
“He was good, you can see he’s a handful, speed, typical goalscorer being there, smelling it and finishing it off. In training he looks really good. Being fit helps. Now two more games and then Chelsea and we’ll see.”
Teenage midfielder Bobby Clark and Diogo Jota also scored before half-time – both assisted by Mohamed Salah – with 17-year-old winger Ben Doak netting midway through the second half.
