Liverpool is busy working away in the transfer market at the moment but sooner rather than later, attention must turn to negotiations of a different kind.
In addition to the number of transfer decisions that Liverpool still has to make this summer — in terms of further arrivals and anyone who could be allowed to depart — there is also another substantial headache brewing in the background for FSG to solve.
Liverpool needs to make a number of decisions over new contracts for various players over the course of the next few months. For some of those, that might involve entering negotiations over an extension; for others, it might be about penciling in those talks for the future; and for others, the decision might be to part ways.
The players who are set to be out of contract in 2024 have been fairly well-documented, with Thiago Alcântara and Joël Matip both set to depart for nothing next summer as things stand.
Even Sepp van den Berg, who could leave this summer, is out of contract next season. He is never going to bring in a huge transfer fee, but his value could be influenced by that. Turning 22 in December, it seems unlikely that the Dutchman will reach the required level at Anfield.
Fabinho does not run out of contract until the following season, which makes his situation interesting considering the struggles that he faced for much of the last campaign, while Andy Robertson is another who still has three seasons left before his deal expires.
The more pressing concerns in terms of making a decision either now or relatively soon are those who could be on the way out in 2024 or 2025, with most of those calls made well in
Thiago, The Athletic reports, has already turned down one offer to move to Saudi Arabia, though more could follow, while there is still time for interest in Matip to mount.
Henderson, who will be 35 by the time his deal runs down, might fall into a similar category, though he could also fill the James Milner role and pen a short-term extension beyond that date.
And then there are big decisions to be made on the likes of Salah and Van Dijk, both of whom have plenty left to offer. Salah, in particular, has shown no signs of slowing down yet and just produced a 30-goal season in a struggling side.
