Mo Salah, a winger for Liverpool, expressed his disappointment at his team’s failure to make the 2023–24 Champions League.
WHAT OCCURED? By defeating Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday night, Manchester United formally secured the final spot in the Champions League for the following season. With their victory, they eliminated Liverpool from the race, forcing the Reds to make do with Europa League play. Salah vented his frustration at Liverpool’s fifth-place finish on Twitter.
They stated, “I’m completely devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed,” he wrote.
“We are Liverpool, and entering the competition is the very least we can do. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We failed both you and ourselves.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Liverpool has finished the season on a roll, winning eight of their last nine matches. But top-four competitors Man United and Newcastle have held them off, leaving the Reds out of the Champions League for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
THEN WHAT? With the Reds being guaranteed to finish fifth, manager Jurgen Klopp can afford to rotate his team when they travel to already-relegated Southampton to conclude the season.
