Leaked Schedule Reveals Kentucky’s Massive ACC/SEC Challenge Opponent

Kentucky vs. North Carolina Headlines Loaded 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge as Schedule Leaks

The schedule has leaked, and with it comes one of the biggest matchups college basketball fans could ask for. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, the University of Kentucky will face fellow blue blood North Carolina in the 2025 ACC/SEC Challenge. This clash of titans will take place at Rupp Arena in Lexington, with the exact date still to be determined.

The Tar Heels, currently ranked No. 25 in ESPN’s offseason Top 25, will travel into hostile territory to face a Kentucky team sitting at No. 9. The stakes will be high, the atmosphere electric, and the implications massive, as both teams look to make an early statement in what promises to be a brutal 2025-26 season.

This won’t be the first time these two storied programs have met, but it will be the first time since 2014 that North Carolina has played inside Rupp Arena. That last meeting in Lexington ended with Kentucky on top, 84-70. In fact, Kentucky has won the last two meetings against UNC, both coming in the CBS Sports Classic — a 98-69 blowout in Las Vegas in 2021, and a narrow 87-83 win in Atlanta in 2023.

Despite Kentucky’s recent success, North Carolina still leads the all-time series 25-18 — a record few programs can boast over the Wildcats. But make no mistake: Mark Pope’s squad will be aiming to continue shifting that narrative on their home court.

While the Kentucky-North Carolina showdown will draw the national spotlight, it’s just one piece of an absolutely loaded schedule for the Wildcats this season — arguably one of the toughest slates in all of college basketball.

Before even reaching the heart of SEC play, Kentucky will have already faced a gauntlet of top-tier opponents:

  • A rivalry clash against No. 7 Louisville on Nov. 11.

  • A Champions Classic meeting with traditional powerhouse Michigan State on Nov. 18 in New York.

  • A neutral-site battle with No. 19 Gonzaga in Nashville on Dec. 5.

  • The renewal of their rivalry with Indiana at Rupp Arena on Dec. 13.

  • A massive CBS Sports Classic showdown against Rick Pitino’s No. 5 St. John’s in Atlanta on Dec. 20.

Kentucky’s exhibition schedule isn’t any softer, opening with a game against No. 1 Purdue on Oct. 24, followed by a matchup with Georgetown on Oct. 30 — both in Rupp Arena.

And if that wasn’t enough, once conference play arrives, the Wildcats will face multiple SEC juggernauts. That includes two games against No. 2 and defending national champion Florida, a road trip to John Calipari’s No. 11 Arkansas, and matchups against No. 14 Auburn, No. 17 Alabama, and No. 23 Tennessee. Every night will be a battle, every game carrying postseason consequences.

As for the full ACC/SEC Challenge slate, fans will have plenty of high-stakes games to enjoy beyond just Kentucky-North Carolina. Here’s the complete reported schedule:

  • North Carolina at Kentucky

  • Louisville at Arkansas

  • Florida at Duke

  • Virginia at Texas

  • NC State at Auburn

  • Clemson at Alabama

  • Oklahoma at Wake Forest

  • SMU at Vanderbilt

  • Texas A&M at Pittsburgh

  • Mississippi State at Georgia Tech

  • Miami at Ole Miss

  • LSU at Boston College

  • Virginia Tech at South Carolina

  • Tennessee at Syracuse

  • Missouri at Notre Dame

  • Georgia at Florida State

Last year, the SEC dominated the Challenge, winning 14 of the 16 matchups, while the conferences split 7-7 in the inaugural edition in 2023. The 2025 edition promises even more intensity, as each matchup will likely feature ranked teams battling for early-season bragging rights and valuable résumé-building wins.

For Kentucky, the road through the 2025-26 season won’t be easy. But that’s exactly how Coach Mark Pope and Big Blue Nation want it. The opportunity to face the very best — from North Carolina, Louisville, Michigan State, and Gonzaga, to Indiana, St. John’s, and the SEC’s elite — gives this Kentucky team the chance to sharpen itself against the highest level of competition before March arrives.

One thing is clear: when Kentucky and North Carolina tip off in Rupp Arena, it won’t just be another game on the schedule. It will be a battle between giants, a clash of tradition, pride, and national championship ambitions.

The blue-blood war is back — and college basketball fans everywhere will be watching.
