Would the Dallas Cowboys be willing to take another swing at the failed Trey Lance experiment? Or is another route more likely in finding their backup to Dak Prescott?
Whenever the Cowboys and starting quarterback Dak Prescott have bumped into major injury obstacles over the last few seasons, Rush has often stepped in as the “elite bus driver.”
Dallas Cowboys QBs Cooper Rush (10), Dak Prescott (4) and Trey Lance (19) talk during practice at the Ford Center at the Star Training Facility.

After an emotional goodbye to a Cowboys veteran, the search now begins for the next Prescott backup. The position has turned into a must-have given Prescott’s latest injury history.
Other than Prescott, Will Grier is the only other quarterback signed to the roster. With Grier likely heading to the practice squad again, a move needs to be made for someone else.
We heard from Stephen Jones that Trey Lance’s Dallas career is more or less over.
But with Rush gone, is the simplest move to being Lance back?
If Lance hasn’t received any interest in free agency by now, he will likely still be available – and at a low price.
Was it a “failed” experiment? Sure. However, Lance as Dak’s immediate backup would set him up in a better opportunity than third on the depth chart.
At 24 years old, Lance’s athleticism keeps his ceiling at a tempting to level gamble on.
The other option – and what we think is most likely to happen – is Dallas finds their QB2 in the NFL Draft.
If this is the plan, a third-round pick would be the position where the Cowboys can get someone reliable enough, cheap, and while not sacrificing more dire needs in earlier rounds.
If no quarterback action is made leading up to April’s draft, expect a rookie to be Dak’s second string.
In free agency, Lance as a “simple” play will be easy on the checkbook and keep some type of continuity in the QB room.
Nothing is off table, but add quarterback to the list of positions that need more urgent attention from the front office.
The Cowboys can’t afford to run into a situation where they have to force a fit … if they can help it.
