Liverpool’s new ‘sporting director’ will be “mainly focused on German market

Jorg Schmadtke is reportedly on the verge of accepting a position as a transfer adviser at Liverpool, where he will reportedly be “mainly focused on the German market.

Schmadtke’s probable role at Anfield and the specifics of his contract have been unclear since ties to him initially surfaced earlier this month.

This week, a number of Merseyside and German sources disagreed with Dominic King’s assertions that the former Wolfsburg sporting director will sign a three-year contract.

Now, additional rumors in Germany say that Schmadtke won’t just be there temporarily but won’t initially be serving in the official capacity of sporting director.

Instead, WAZ describes the 59-year-old as a “transfer consultant” with “all the powers.”

Alongside Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, club leaders Mike Gordon and Billy Hogan, director of recruiting Dave Fallows, and chief scout Barry Hunter, he will function within the organization as it is now.

Prior to an official confirmation, WAZ claims Schmadtke has reached an agreement with the club and will be in the city later this week.

He will start on June 1 and hold the position for the first three months as Liverpool continues the search for a permanent sporting director.

The two parties could then decide to make their relationship permanent, though reports from England imply that this is not a given.

It’s interesting that Schmadtke has been referred to by Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg as the “transfer boss,” and this is unlikely to be a case of misunderstanding considering the prominence of the sports director position in Germany.

Dortmund’s pursuit of Jude Bellingham has been put on hold, and the club is now reportedly focusing on Alexis Mac Allister and Mason Mount as their top midfield targets.

Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Munich has consistently been mentioned, but there aren’t many other targets that are currently recognized, either in midfield or defense, who play their game in Germany.

Liverpool is expected to provide clarification on Schmadtke’s position should an official statement regarding his appointment be made, albeit that is not certain.
