For most kids growing up in North Carolina, putting on a Tar Heel jersey is the stuff of dreams.
For Drake Powell, that dream became a reality—and now, it’s a mission.
Powell, a 6-foot-6 guard from Pittsboro, North Carolina, is not just one of the most promising young players in the country—he’s a homegrown product living out a legacy. As he begins his career with the University of North Carolina men’s basketball program, Powell carries with him the pride of a small town, the unwavering support of his family, and the deep responsibility of representing one of college basketball’s most storied programs.
And he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Hometown Heart, Tar Heel Soul
Drake Powell’s journey to Chapel Hill began just down the road in Pittsboro—a quiet, tight-knit community nestled in Chatham County. While the town may not be known nationally for producing basketball stars, Powell is helping put it on the map. His athleticism, defensive tenacity, and high basketball IQ caught the attention of recruiters early, but what really stood out was his maturity and poise.
Playing high school ball at Northwood, Powell quickly became a standout—drawing national attention and earning a five-star rating from recruiting services. But despite the spotlight, he stayed grounded. That humility and work ethic reflect the values instilled by his family and community.
“I wouldn’t be here without Pittsboro,” Powell says. “That place raised me. The people there have always supported me, from my first game to my commitment to Carolina. I feel like I’m carrying them with me every time I step on the court.”
A Dream Realized in Carolina Blue
Choosing UNC wasn’t just a recruiting decision—it was a personal milestone. Powell grew up watching Carolina legends like Ty Lawson, Marcus Paige, and Coby White, dreaming of playing in the Dean Dome. The moment he received his offer from the Tar Heels, something clicked.
“There’s something about this program—it’s more than just basketball,” Powell explains. “It’s family. It’s tradition. It’s legacy. I grew up watching this team and now I’m a part of it. That’s a feeling I can’t even describe.”
Powell’s commitment came early and never wavered. In an era of frequent decommitments and shifting loyalties, his dedication to UNC stood out. That loyalty hasn’t gone unnoticed by head coach Hubert Davis, who’s praised Powell’s defensive instincts, leadership potential, and commitment to team culture.
“He understands what it means to be a Tar Heel,” Davis said. “He plays hard, he plays smart, and he plays for something bigger than himself.”
Family First
At the heart of Powell’s journey is his family. His parents, deeply involved in both his athletic and personal development, have been his biggest cheerleaders and toughest critics. Their guidance helped him stay focused through the pressures of national rankings, recruiting buzz, and high expectations.
“My parents taught me to work for everything,” Powell says. “They never let me settle. Whether it was school, basketball, or just being a good person, they pushed me. And now, every time I walk into the Dean Dome, I want to make them proud.”
That family-first mindset extends to his approach on the court. Known for his team-first mentality, Powell is just as happy making a key defensive stop or setting up a teammate as he is scoring himself. He sees basketball as a way to give back—to his family, his community, and the program he loves.
Looking Ahead
As Powell prepares for his freshman season, the expectations are high—but so is the excitement. Carolina fans are eager to see what this local star can do in a Tar Heel uniform. And while the pressure of playing for a blue-blood program is real, Powell sees it as a privilege, not a burden.
“I know what this means—to be a part of Carolina Basketball,” Powell says. “It’s bigger than me. It’s about representing everyone who believes in me, from Pittsboro to Chapel Hill and beyond. I’m ready to work, ready to learn, and ready to compete.”
A Story Still Being Written
Drake Powell’s story is one of promise, pride, and purpose. From the gyms of Pittsboro to the bright lights of Chapel Hill, he’s carried himself with grace, grit, and gratitude. And while his journey is just beginning, one thing is certain: he’s not walking it alone.
He’s walking it with his family, his coaches, his teammates—and the entire town of Pittsboro behind him.
And for Carolina fans, that’s a story worth cheering for.
