Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher will be relieved after his side’s 3-2 win against Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday.
Conor Gallagher could have cost Chelsea the game after getting sent off in the first half, but the Blues just about managed to get away with it.
Nevertheless, the 23-year-old should not feel completely at ease. There is now a chance that he could lose his place in Mauricio Pochettino‘s starting XI.
Conor Gallagher’s ill-discipline
There is no denying that Gallagher has been one of Chelsea’s top performers this season.
According to WhoScored, the Englishman is making 2.8 tackles per game in the Premier League, the second-highest average in Chelsea’s squad.
However, he has also committed the most fouls in the Premier League this season (34), as shown on the division’s official website.
Gallagher has now picked up a red card as well, which means he will miss the game against Manchester United on Wednesday. It gives someone else a chance to come into the side and if they manage to deliver, then it could be bad news for Gallagher.
Last term, the England international was sent off once and cautioned 10 times in the top flight. It is the kind of ill-discipline that can cause a manager to lose trust in his player.
Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia will be eyeing Conor Gallagher’s spot
With Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia lurking in the background, still waiting to make their Chelsea debuts, Gallagher really needs to take every opportunity he gets.
United would have been another game for him to prove himself, but that is now out of the window.
What would make things worse is if Nkunku or Lavia were able to feature in the fixture and make an instant impact. It would most certainly condemn Gallagher to the bench.
Gallagher had done really well up until the red card against Brighton, which left BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks far from impressed.
It did not cost Chelsea in the end, but who knows how that and Nkunku and Lavia returning could now go on to impact his future
