Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen has turned down the opportunity to join another Premier League club.
Ian Maatsen is closing in on a move to Borussia Dortmund, but it appears that the German side are not the only team interested in the 21-year-old left-back.
According to Bild, Maatsen has turned down a lucrative offer from Burnley because he really wants to join Dortmund, who are looking to bring the Dutchman in on loan.
It is a blow for Vincent Kompany, who is already familiar with the Chelsea star.
Maatsen, of course, spent last season on loan at Burnley, helping them win promotion back to the Championship.
Ian Maatsen wants Borussia Dortmund move over Burnley
It is obviously not a shock to hear that Maatsen would prefer to join Dortmund over Burnley.
He will have fond memories from his time at Turf Moor, but Dortmund are a European giant currently playing in the Champions League. A player picking that over a relegation battle is to be expected.
At the end of the day, the most important thing for Maatsen was probably getting out of Chelsea to get more opportunities. This season, he has made just one start in the Premier League.
However, he is now set to obtain more than that. The defender is going to get to play at one of the biggest clubs in Europe and the chance to compete in the Champions League.
As for Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino will still have Levi Colwill, Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella for the left-back position. However, it is being reported that the Blues could yet enter the market to replace Maatsen.
One option for Chelsea could be Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. It is hard to imagine the Bundesliga champions selling such a key player in the middle of the season, though.
